At Eden Medical, every lip filler treatment is designed around the patient. The goal is never an obvious or overdone result, but a subtle enhancement that looks like the best version of your own lips.

What to Expect

Your treatment begins with a consultation where your doctor will assess your lips, discuss your goals and plan the most appropriate approach. Lip filler is suitable for most adults, with the exception of those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will take time to understand the result you are looking for and will advise on the amount and placement of filler that best suits your facial proportions.

Around 10 to 15 minutes before treatment, a prescription anaesthetic cream is applied to the lips to ensure comfort. Filler is then injected at precise points and gently massaged to distribute the product evenly. The session takes 15 to 30 minutes in total. Results are visible immediately, with the final outcome best assessed one to two weeks later once any swelling has settled. Amounts start from 0.5ml and go up to 1ml depending on your goals.

Benefits of Lip Filler

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body and plays a key role in keeping skin hydrated and plump. When injected into the lips, it adds volume, defines the border and improves the overall shape while also delivering hydration to the lip tissue itself. Because it is broken down and reabsorbed by the body over time, the effect is non-permanent and can be maintained with regular top-up treatments.

At Eden Medical, lip filler results are designed to look soft and elegant rather than obvious. The approach is always conservative and considered, with the amount of product used determined by your individual features and goals rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Results typically last 6 to 12 months, with many patients choosing a top-up around the 6-month mark to maintain their preferred look.

Post-Treatment Care & Side Effects

Some simple precautions in the first 24 hours after treatment help minimise swelling and support the best possible result. Your doctor will go through this before you leave.

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and anti-inflammatory medication for two days after treatment and one week before
  • Apply ice gently to the lips if swelling occurs, wrapping it in a cloth rather than applying directly
  • Do not rub or massage the lips for at least four hours after treatment
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, walking is fine
  • Avoid smoking and excessive sun exposure in the days following treatment as both can affect how long results last
  • Avoid very hot food and drinks for 24 hours after treatment

If you are prone to cold sores, please inform your doctor before treatment as lip injections can occasionally trigger an outbreak. An oral prescription can be arranged in advance if needed.

Lip filler is well tolerated by most patients. The lips are a sensitive area and some swelling is very common immediately after treatment, but this settles quickly. Common temporary side effects include:
  • Swelling and mild puffiness in the lips
  • Redness or tenderness at the injection sites
  • Light bruising or discolouration
  • Mild itching
These effects generally resolve within 2 to 7 days. All potential side effects will be discussed in full during your consultation.

Lip Filler Results Timeline

  • Immediately after treatment: Fuller, more defined lips are visible straight away. Some swelling will also be present at this stage, so the lips may look slightly more voluminous than the final result.
  • Days 1 to 3: Swelling begins to settle. The lips start to look more natural and the shape becomes clearer.
  • Days 7 to 14: The final result is established. The swelling has fully resolved and the lips look naturally fuller, softer and more defined.
  • Months 3 to 6: Results remain consistent. The lips look naturally enhanced with no visible sign of treatment.
  • 6 to 12 months: The hyaluronic acid is gradually broken down and reabsorbed by the body. Results begin to soften and a top-up treatment at this stage maintains the desired look.

The swelling immediately after lip filler can catch some patients off guard, but it settles quickly and the final result at two weeks is a far more accurate reflection of how the lips will look going forward. Most patients find the outcome softer and more natural than they anticipated.

Lip Filler FAQs

Lip fillers work by injecting a gel-like substance made of a hyaluronic acid base into the lips to add volume, shape, and definition. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, and it is particularly abundant in the skin, connective tissues, and eyes.

When injected into the lips, hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to water molecules, creating a plumping effect. This can help to increase the size of the lips, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, and improve the overall contour and shape of the lips.

The effects of hyaluronic acid lip fillers are not permanent and typically last between 6 to 18 months. Over time, the body gradually absorbs the hyaluronic acid, and the lips will return to their original size and shape.

Lip fillers typically last between 6 to 12 months, depending on factors such as your metabolism, lifestyle, and the type of filler used. Regular maintenance appointments can help you maintain your desired look.

The cost of lip filler varies based on the amount of product used and your personalised treatment plan. At Eden Medical, we provide transparent pricing during your consultation to ensure you understand the costs involved. Check out our price-list to find out more on the cost of our treatments.

The healing time for lip fillers varies per person. In general, most people will experience some swelling, redness, and tenderness in the lips immediately after the injection, which may last for several days.

Typically, the initial swelling and bruising will start to subside within 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. However, it may take up to 2 weeks for the lips to fully heal and for the final results to be visible.

Swelling is a common side effect of lip fillers, and it can take a few days to subside. However, there are several things you can do to help reduce swelling and discomfort after the procedure:

  1. Apply ice: Applying ice to the treated area can help to reduce swelling and numb any discomfort. Use a cold pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel and apply it to the lips for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

  2. Avoid heat: Avoid exposure to heat, direct sunlight or sunbeds for at least 24 hours after the procedure, as this can worsen swelling.

  3. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help to flush out any excess fluids in the body and reduce swelling.

  4. Elevate your head: Sleeping with your head elevated on pillows can help to reduce swelling by promoting blood circulation.

  5. Avoid alcohol and salty foods: Alcohol and salty foods can dehydrate the body and worsen swelling. It is best to avoid these for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

It is not recommended to smoke after lip filler for at least 24 hours, as smoking can increase the risk of complications and slow down the healing process.

Smoking can cause vasoconstriction, which is the narrowing of blood vessels, leading to decreased blood flow and oxygen supply to the treated area. This can increase the risk of infection, delayed healing, and poor results.

Additionally, smoking can also cause dehydration, which can worsen swelling and discomfort after the procedure. It is best to avoid smoking for at least 24 hours after the procedure to allow the body to heal properly and reduce the risk of complications.

Yes, you can eat after lip filler injections, but it’s advisable to avoid extremely hot or spicy foods and to use gentle mouth movements initially.
There can be some discomfort during the injections into the lip, but most patients find it manageable. Topical numbing agents or fillers with built-in anaesthetics can reduce pain.
No, lip fillers are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. This is to ensure the safety of both you and your baby, as there is limited research on the effects of dermal fillers during this time.
Most patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. A numbing cream is applied beforehand, and many fillers contain a local anaesthetic for added comfort. The sensation is often described as a slight pinch.
