Masseter Treatment

The masseter is the large muscle on either side of the jaw responsible for chewing. When this muscle becomes overdeveloped, through teeth grinding, jaw clenching or natural anatomy, it can create a wide, square-looking jaw and contribute to jaw tension, headaches and tooth wear.

Masseter treatment uses anti-wrinkle injections to relax and gradually reduce the size of this muscle, slimming the lower face for a more defined, oval facial shape while also relieving the functional discomfort that comes with an overactive jaw.

What to Expect

Your treatment begins with a consultation where your doctor will assess the masseter muscle on both sides of the jaw, discuss your goals and confirm suitability. Masseter treatment is suitable for most adults, with the exception of those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will assess the size and symmetry of the muscle before treatment to ensure a balanced result.

A topical anaesthetic may be applied beforehand for comfort. An anti-wrinkle solution is then injected directly into the masseter muscle on each side of the jaw. The session takes around 20 minutes. Results develop more gradually than other anti-wrinkle treatments because they depend on the physical reduction of the muscle itself. Full results are typically visible at 4 to 6 weeks. Mild swelling or tenderness may occur but typically settles within a few days.

Benefits of Masseter Treatment

Masseter treatment is one of the most versatile anti-wrinkle applications available because it addresses both aesthetic and functional concerns simultaneously. For patients who grind their teeth or clench their jaw, the treatment provides genuine relief from tension headaches, jaw pain and tooth wear while also slimming the lower face. For those whose primary concern is facial shape, it creates a softer, more oval jawline that complements the overall proportions of the face.

The results develop more gradually than standard anti-wrinkle treatments because they depend on the physical reduction of the muscle itself rather than just a relaxation of activity. Full results are typically visible at four to six weeks. With regular treatment, the masseter gradually reduces in size and results can become increasingly long-lasting over time. Both sides of the jaw are always assessed and treated to ensure a balanced, symmetrical outcome.

Post-Treatment Care & Side Effects

Following treatment, some simple precautions in the first week help protect the result and support recovery. Your doctor will go through everything before you leave.

  • Avoid direct sunlight and tanning machines during recovery
  • Avoid alcohol, aspirin and ibuprofen for seven days before and after treatment
  • Avoid blood-thinning supplements including vitamins A, C and E for seven days
  • Avoid vigorous physical exercise for seven days
Avoid heat treatments on the treated area for ten weeks
  • Avoid extremes of temperature during recovery
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the jaw area for the first few hours after treatment

Masseter treatment is well tolerated by most patients. Side effects are generally mild and resolve on their own within a few days.

Common temporary side effects include:

  • Mild swelling and redness at the injection sites
  • Tenderness or soreness around the jaw
  • Light bruising or discolouration
  • Mild itching

A temporary mild reduction in bite strength may also be noticeable in the first few weeks as the muscle adjusts. This is normal and resolves as the body adapts. All potential side effects will be discussed in full during your consultation.

Masseter Treatment Results Timeline

  • Immediately after treatment: Mild tenderness or swelling at the injection sites. This settles quickly.
  • Weeks 2 to 3: The masseter begins to reduce in activity. Some initial softening of the jaw may be noticeable.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: The full effect becomes visible. The jaw appears noticeably slimmer and more defined, and any associated grinding or clenching is significantly reduced.
  • Months 2 to 4: Results remain consistent. The lower face looks naturally refined without any sign of treatment.
  • Months 3 to 6: Muscle activity gradually returns, and the masseter may begin to rebuild. A follow-up treatment maintains the slimmer jaw and functional benefit.

Masseter treatment is one of the few aesthetic treatments that delivers a meaningful functional benefit alongside the cosmetic result. Patients who grind their teeth consistently find the relief significant, often describing it as one of the most impactful treatments they have had.

The masseter is one of the main muscles responsible for chewing. Located on each side of the jaw, it connects the cheekbone to the lower jaw and is often overused during activities like teeth grinding or excessive chewing.

The masseter muscle is located on both sides of the lower jaw, extending from the cheekbone to the lower edge of the mandible. It plays a key role in biting and chewing.
Masseter Botox results usually last between 3 to 6 months. For optimal results, follow-up treatments are recommended as the effects begin to wear off.

Masseter Botox is a treatment involving the injection of botulinum toxin into the masseter muscles to relax them. It helps alleviate teeth grinding, jaw pain, and tension headaches while also slimming the jawline.

Botox or other anti-wrinkle injections work for teeth grinding by targeting the masseter muscles involved in clenching, and grinding the teeth. When anti-wrinkle treatment is injected into these muscles on either side of the face, it paralyses the area leading to muscle relaxation.

By reducing the activity of the jaw muscles, Botox helps alleviate the clenching and grinding associated with jaw clenching or teeth grinding. The effects of Botox for teeth grinding are not immediate, and it may take a few days to start noticing a reduction in symptoms.

Masseter Botox, also known as jawline Botox or masseter reduction, is a cosmetic procedure that involves injecting Botox into the masseter muscles to achieve a slimming effect on the face. The masseter muscles are the main muscles responsible for chewing, and when they are overdeveloped it can result in a wider or more square-shaped face.

Using a fine needle our doctor will carefully inject small amounts of anti-wrinkle treatment into the masseter muscles causing the muscles to relax and reduce in size over time. This can lead to a slimmer and more contoured appearance of the jawline and lower face.

Botox for bruxism refers to the use of Botox injections as a treatment for teeth grinding or clenching, which is medically known as bruxism. Bruxism can lead to various symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, tooth damage, and other dental issues.

You may notice symptom relief, such as reduced jaw tension or teeth grinding, within a few days. Visible slimming of the jawline usually becomes noticeable after 4 to 6 weeks.
Masseter Botox treatments are typically repeated every 3 to 6 months, depending on individual results and how quickly the muscle regains activity.
Yes, you can eat after masseter Botox. However, it’s recommended to avoid hard or chewy foods for the first 24 hours to allow the treatment to settle properly.

After masseter Botox, avoid the following for at least 24 hours:

  • Massaging the treated area.
  • Strenuous physical activity.
  • Lying down for at least 4 hours.
  • Excessive heat exposure (e.g., saunas, hot baths).
  • Alcohol consumption.
